Lac La Biche, Alta. – On December 24, 2025, shortly after 6 p.m., Lac La Biche RCMP responded immediately to a firearm related call where a rural resident reported an unknown male was in his yard when he returned home. Subsequently, one male in a pickup truck pointed a long gun at him, demanded him to leave, and stole a vehicle from his property.
On January 4, 2026, while on patrol Lac La Biche RCMP located this stolen vehicle in Lac La Biche and the male driver was arrested. Further police investigation led a local motel where the robbery suspect was believed to be staying. On January 5, 2026, a search warrant was granted for police to search a specific motel room linked to the suspect. Prior to attempting an arrest, four nearby schools were advised to hold and secure, while neighboring motel rooms were evacuated for public safety. The robbery suspect, Sonny Giant, was subsequently arrested without incident and has been remanded in police custody.
Sonny Ray Giant, 44-years-old, of Fort McMurray, a known prolific offender, is facing multiple charges including break and enter to a residence, pointing a firearm and robbery. Giant is set to appear in Lac La Biche Provincial Court on January 12, 2026.
During this police investigation, the Lac La Biche RCMP worked with the assistance of several RCMP partnering units including the Real Time Operation Centre in Edmonton, Eastern Alberta District’s Crime Reduction Unit, Forensic Identification Section, Emergency Response Team, and Critical Incident Command.

Lac La Biche, Alb. – Le 24 décembre 2025, peu après 18 h, la GRC de Lac La Biche a répondu immédiatement à un appel lié à une arme à feu, lorsqu’un résident rural a signalé qu’un homme inconnu se trouvait dans sa cour à son retour à la maison. Par la suite, un homme dans un camion a pointé une arme longue sur lui, lui a ordonné de partir et a volé un véhicule sur sa propriété.
Le 4 janvier 2026, lors d’une patrouille, la GRC de Lac La Biche a localisé ce véhicule volé à Lac La Biche et a arrêté le conducteur. Une enquête policière plus approfondie a mené à un motel local où le suspect du vol serait hébergé. Le 5 janvier 2026, un mandat de perquisition a été délivré pour permettre à la police de fouiller une chambre de motel spécifique liée au suspect. Avant la tentative d’arrestation, quatre écoles voisines ont été avisées de sécuriser leurs locaux, et les chambres de motel voisines ont été évacuées pour des raisons de sécurité publique. Le suspect du vol, Sonny Giant, a ensuite été arrêté sans incident et a été placé en détention policière.

Au cours de cette enquête policière, la GRC de Lac La Biche a travaillé avec l’aide de plusieurs unités partenaires de la GRC, dont le Centre d’opérations en temps réel d’Edmonton, l’Unité de réduction du crime du district de l’est de l’Alberta, la Section d’identification judiciaire, l’Équipe d’intervention d’urgence et le Commandement des incidents critiques.

Nous voulons remercier les personnes touchées par l’opération policière pour leur soutien et leur coopération. »
