Athabasca RCMP investigating fatal collision on Highway 813
ATHABASCA, Alta. — Athabasca RCMP are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Tuesday afternoon on Highway 813 near Township Road 691.
Police say officers were called to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2026. Preliminary investigation indicates the sole occupant of a transport truck had pulled over onto the shoulder to assist another motorist who had entered the ditch. While clearing accumulated snow from the rear of the semi-trailer, the driver was struck by a southbound pickup truck, which collided with the back of the trailer and pinned him.
Emergency Medical Services, the Athabasca County Fire Department, and RCMP immediately attended the scene and initiated life-saving efforts. The 57-year-old male driver of the transport truck, a resident of Stony Plain, Alta., was transported to hospital by ground ambulance but succumbed to his injuries en route.
The pickup truck was driven by a 41-year-old man from Edmonton. He was assessed at the scene and released without injury.
The investigation remains ongoing. Police say weather and road conditions are believed to have contributed to the collision, with blowing snow causing reduced visibility.
Athabasca RCMP have extended their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

GRC d’Athabasca enquête sur une collision mortelle sur la route 813
ATHABASCA (Alb.) — La GRC d’Athabasca enquête sur une collision routière mortelle survenue mardi après-midi sur la route 813, près du chemin de canton 691.
Les services policiers ont été appelés sur les lieux vers 15 h 30, le 17 février 2026. Selon les premières constatations, le seul occupant d’un camion de transport s’était immobilisé sur l’accotement afin de venir en aide à un autre automobiliste embourbé dans le fossé. Alors qu’il déneigeait l’arrière de sa remorque, une camionnette circulant en direction sud sur la route 813 est entrée en collision avec l’arrière du semi-remorque, coinçant le conducteur du camion.
Les services médicaux d’urgence, le Service d’incendie du comté d’Athabasca et la GRC sont intervenus rapidement et ont entrepris des manœuvres de réanimation. Le conducteur du camion de transport, un homme de 57 ans originaire de Stony Plain, a été transporté à l’hôpital par ambulance terrestre, mais a succombé à ses blessures durant le transport.
Le conducteur de la camionnette, un homme de 41 ans résident d’Edmonton, a été évalué sur place et n’a subi aucune blessure.
L’enquête se poursuit. La GRC indique que les conditions météorologiques et routières pourraient avoir contribué à la collision, des vents soulevant la neige ayant causé une visibilité réduite.
